Exoplanet Watch website research with NASA JPL
Exoplanet Watch is a public NASA site where people can help observe planets around other stars. A lot of it was written for readers who already knew the science.
In fall 2022 I was on a six-student team in UCLA's User Experience Design course. We researched the site with NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory and recommended how to make it clearer for beginners. A second student group in the same class studied the data-reduction software.
My part was the card-sorting protocol, with two teammates, plus interviews and the writeup on newsletter and community-chat engagement. The team of six interviewed 15 people: high school students, college students, graduate students, and working adults. Most had little or no astronomy background. Sessions used one script: think aloud, try to find the newsletter, the chat, and the software, then sort pages by who they seemed written for.
What we saw: dense pages, unclear steps, and doubt about whether a telescope was required. The newsletter and chat did not interest most people until the chat was described as help. The software was easy to miss. Some pages, including what to observe and the publications list, read as expert-only.
What we recommended: a beginner path and a separate path for people who already have a telescope; shorter pages with steps in order (learn, join, observe, analyze, submit); plain-language explanation of the software; and signups that do not block the page. We turned that into an experience map, a proposed site map, and wireframes for three pages.
